Just about a month ago I was awarded a studio residency at Gallery
Aferro in Newark, NJ. This fall, after putting together the application and requisite writings and portfolio requirements, I put the whole lot of it in the mail and hoped for the best. And the first part of 'the best' happened - the studio space will be mine for the term of 6 months, and I will be granted a solo show after the residency has concluded. Now, it is wait and see for the second part of that best - the money (commissions, tutoring, and grants) - to be figured out.
The above photograph is of the raw space, just a few of my things in it after "move-in" this weekend. I am one of five residents at
Aferro, and I am thrilled at the prospect of working in such close proximity to artists all being granted the same thing - space, access to community, and access to resources.
The other artists in residency are located on the
Aferro website (see People, Places, Things).
